Three players called up to national team

Cyprus’ national team is gearing up for the international friendly away games against Hungary and Ukraine on June 4 and 7 respectively.

Three Apollon players were called up by the national team’s coach Nikos Kostenoglou: Ioannis Pittas, Charalambos Kyriakou and Andreas Panagiotou. They will take part in Cyprus’ national team trainings and will be available in view of the upcoming games.

Ioannis Pittas made his official debut with the Men’s national team on 13/10/2019 against Russia, so far he has made 15 international appearances and scored one goal.

One of the team’s captain, Haralambos Kyriakou, had his first cap with the national team during an international friendly game at GSP against Northern Ireland on 3/5/2014. All in all, he played 34 times for the national team.

Andreas Panagiotou came back to the Men’s National Team after two years. The international wing-back played for the first and only time with the national team on 22/3/2017 in a friendly game against Kazakhstan at GSP.

Andreas Panagiotou discussed with the team’s press officer about his return to the Men’s national team:

“I am very happy that Mr. Kostenoglou considered my comeback into the national team. Since the beginning of the season, It has been a goal for me. Thanks to my performance at Apollon this season, I managed to put myself under the spotlight and I now I can say that I succeeded in getting back to the national team.”
When asking him whether he expected to be called up, the 25-year-old defender said that his good performances with the team recently boosted his confidence and believed his name would be written on the list.

The player promised he would give his best for the national team: “I am willing to do whatever Mr. Kostenoglou asks me and I will try to give my best in order to honor national flag on my chest.”

Finally, we asked him to say a few words about the next two opponents of the national team, he also had a word on his former teammate Attila Salae: “Both countries will take part in the upcoming Euro and they are high quality teams. I will also have the opportunity to meet Attila after a few months, I will be very happy to meet him again in person.”
