Andreas Shikkis: “Ready for hard work and progress
Andreas Shikkis is the latest addition to our squad, and he speaks for the first time to the club’s official website, www.apollon.com.cy, about his move to Limassol and the new chapter in his career.
Welcome to our team. What was your first thought when you found out about Apollon’s interest?
I saw it in a very positive light, as Apollon is one of the top clubs in the league. It’s a healthy organization that competes every year for titles and European football. From the moment I heard about the interest, I felt it was a great step forward in my career and the right team for my development.
Why did you feel that Apollon was the right club for you?
It’s a team that supports Cypriot players, has very loyal fans, and although I had offers from one or two other teams, I was convinced that Apollon was the best option.
You’re a player who rose through the ranks of your hometown club, reached the First Division and earned a call-up to the National Team. Now you’re joining one of the biggest clubs in Cyprus to compete for silverware. What goes through your mind when you realize this?
I feel very happy and proud to have the opportunity to play for such a big club in Cyprus. The goals of the team are different – Apollon always aims high in the league – but I feel ready to contribute in my own way and help the team achieve its objectives.
With over 150 senior appearances, you now have experience under your belt. Do you feel it’s the right time to take the next step in your career?
I believe it was the right time, because you never know if you’ll get another chance to play for a big team like Apollon. I feel ready – both physically and mentally – and I truly want to make the most of this opportunity. I’m eager to learn from my teammates and the coach to become even better.
What is the next step for you?
In life, I take things step by step. Apollon is a big club and it’s not easy to be a regular starter right away. My first goal is to establish myself in the squad, and then we’ll see what comes next.
You mentioned our fans. What’s your opinion about them?
The first time I faced Apollon, at “Antonis Papadopoulos”, the game was played without away fans, so I didn’t get to see them. But in the second round, even though the stadium wasn’t full, the atmosphere was great. The Cup match against Pafos, which I watched on TV, had one of the best atmospheres of the whole season. I also attended the friendly against AEK Athens at the Alphamega as a fan, and it was a wonderful experience.
What qualities do you bring to the team that you believe will help the most?
I always give 100% whenever I play. I’m a player who tries to improve every single day, and I believe I can contribute both defensively and offensively.
You recently made your debut with the Cyprus Men’s National Team. What was that like?
To be honest, I still haven’t fully realized that I’ve played for the National Team. Two years ago, I never imagined I’d reach that level. I’m grateful for the opportunity, and I hope to continue like this. It’s a moment I’ll always remember.
What message would you like to send to the fans?
What I can promise is that I’ll give 100% in every training session and every match. If we all stay united – players, coaches, and management – we can achieve great things together.
