Chambos renewals his contract until 2025
Apollon FC announces the renewal of Charalambos Kyriakou contract until 2025.
The international midfielder is coming from Apollon’s Academy and until today he completed 225 appearances.
He won with club one championship, three cups and two super cups.
The captain spoke at www.apollon.com.cy for his new contract and the prospect of the new season.
What was it that led you to the decision to renew your contract until 2025?
When the first meeting for the renewal of my contract with the chairman Nikos Kirzis took place last January, I asked him to have this discussion at the end of the season and he fully respected it.
The most important thing and fortunately for that, is that the year ended in the best way for us winning the championship. When you achieve your goals there is a better mood.
Talking to the president again, I asked him for a little more time to play for a team abroad. I have stated many times that my future would be either Apollon or abroad.
The time I asked for was exhausted without finding any better proposal or perspective from Apollon and respecting the attitude and the way the president himself handled the whole issue, I decided that I would like to continue here.
Everything I experienced in the last weeks clarified in me what Apollon is for me but also what I am to Apollon.
However, these are not the last events that prove the above but also the support that the club provided me when I had two serious injuries in the past. This team stood by me in difficult times and I appreciate it unimaginably.
Is there any interest from other clubs from Cyprus?
Some contacts were made but from the first moment my answer was that Apollon has the first say.
You have been at Apollon since your childhood, managing to celebrate everything in this club. You won championships, cups, super cups, played in European clubs and now something bigger is coming, such as the Champions League! Do you feel you have a responsibility to offer even more as a member of this evolving team?
I will never stop offering to Apollon. Yes, it’s the team that started my football career and became a man of football here and that might motivate me more. For me, all footballers evolve every day, through training and matches.
There is always something more, we are not done with the championship. The point is to set new goals every day and test your limits. I will continue to give my best for this team and the goals will never stop being set!
The desire of the fans to stay here was strong. How did you manage all this?
I completely respect the world of Apollo and it is very nice to be told “stay” and to show you in practice that they want you to stay.
What I did all this time was to thank them through my performance on the pitch. I thank them for the messages and for their support in the last games.
I have been promoted to the A’ team since I was 16, for 11 years. Growing up, however, and because the footballer’s career is very short, I felt that now, especially after winning the league, was the right time to take the next step, to play abroad. I offered everything to the team, especially the championship, the cups, the participations in the European groups and the shields.
I am 27 today and I thought I would take a short break abroad and come back after 2-3 years to end my career here.
That was my goal when I was 16. That the day would come when I would compete abroad.
It did not happen, maybe it will be better, maybe it will happen in the future no one can know.
At the moment I am completely focused on Apollo and I am looking forward to the next challenges.
As you said, you offered to Apollon being part of the history of one of the most successful teams in Cyprus. What does it mean for you to be a member, leader of the team that has brought so much success to the team in the last 10 years?
I am very happy and proud of what we have achieved. Of course. Beyond that, what I see from my side, is that since today I have more three years here and I will give everything to achieve our goals. What ever it is a championship, or a cup, or qualifying for the group stage. I will offer my all to bring even more success in the future.
Giving everything, I as a leader, I believe that I will be a role model and I will inspire my other teammates to be even better and to give their best to achieve our goals. I feel like I gave what I could. We can always go for more, yes I understand, but at the moment I gave it my all!
The season ended perfectly for Apollon with the fans celebrating the championship and a new season is coming with our team entering a new stadium in Limassol. How important is it?
First of all I would like to thank the people of Apollon for the support they have shown throughout the season. Especially in the last games with the continuous sold out and the great atmosphere they created. I promise them that I will offer the best to Apollo until the last moment I will be here.
As for the new stadium, whenever our move is made, it will be the next step for Apollon and for the teams of Limassol in general. Our city is in great need of it.
Because we watched the work every day when we went for training, it is a jewel of all Cyprus. It will be the most modern and modern stadium in our country.
This shows that Apollo is growing outside the playing lines and I believe that even better days will come.
We wish Chambos even greater success with our team.
