This initiative further strengthens Cyprus’ growing international image as an emerging destination for global film production.
The full Copper Island press release follows, outlining the highlights of the event as well as upcoming international productions that bring Cyprus to the forefront of the global stage:
Copper Island officially announced its presence in Cyprus with a glamorous event held at its brand-new post-production studio in the historic old town of Limassol. The company’s establishment signifies a major investment in the island’s creative industries and highlights Cyprus’ emerging role as a dynamic player in the international film scene.
The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou, representing the President of the Republic of Cyprus, the Mayor of Limassol Mr. Yiannis Armeftis, representatives of the U.S. and Greek embassies, members of the Cyprus Film Commission, and prominent figures from the cultural, academic, media, and business sectors.
Founded by Matt Murphie, Copper Island is a Cyprus-based company that has already gained international acclaim, participating in film projects with a combined budget exceeding $100 million in just the past two years. Through an ever-growing global network, the company has collaborated on productions directed by Ron Howard, Gus Van Sant, and Simon West, and featuring world-renowned actors including Sir Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, Jude Law, Bill Skarsgård, Ana de Armas, Sydney Sweeney, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl, Shia LaBeouf, and Colman Domingo.
The decision to base the company in Cyprus was a strategic and deeply intentional one. As a long-term resident of the island, founder Matt Murphie recognized Cyprus’ untapped cinematic potential early on. After years of investing in the country, he identified not just a stunning location, but a vibrant and fast-growing creative ecosystem. Rich in talent, with diverse landscapes and expanding infrastructure, Cyprus emerged as an ideal launchpad for world-class productions.
Commenting on the launch, Murphie stated:
“The vision of Copper Island is to promote Cyprus globally as a premier film production destination, to showcase the island’s unique and multifaceted natural beauty, and to support economic investment through the film industry. Today’s event marks more than the beginning of our studio’s operations – it’s a celebration of the many opportunities that Cyprus offers, and of the local talent it continues to produce.”
Speaking on behalf of the President of the Republic, Deputy Minister of Culture Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou remarked during the inauguration:
“Having seen the state-of-the-art facilities and the clear dedication of the team, I am confident that Copper Island will play an instrumental role in establishing Cyprus as a landmark for international film production.”
Filmmaker and producer Stelana Kliris shared a moving testimonial from her collaboration with Copper Island:
“Copper Island was an integral part of my recent production Apart from Her, both in terms of funding and creative support during post-production. The team stepped in at a crucial moment and were simply fantastic to work with. I’m truly grateful for their trust. Their actions prove they are here to empower the local industry and attract international productions to Cyprus.”
