Balogiannis completes move to Apollon
Apollon Football (Public) Ltd announces the completion of the agreement with Konstantinos Balogiannis, who successfully passed the required medical examinations.
The Greek left-back becomes the newest member of the Apollon family and, in his first interview with the club’s official website, speaks about the reasons behind his decision to join Apollon, his discussions with head coach Hernan Losada, the experiences he gained throughout his career in Greece, England, the Netherlands and Bulgaria, as well as the goals he has set with his new team.
Welcome to Apollon. How do you feel about opening a new chapter in your career?
First of all, thank you very much for the warm welcome. I feel very happy, excited and optimistic. Apollon’s project is something that appealed to me from the very beginning and I believe I can give my best and continue to develop as a player. I want to help the team achieve its goals and enjoy a successful season.
What made you say “yes” to Apollon?
What I was told was that the club has high ambitions both domestically and in Europe. I see a club that always wants to improve and evolve, and that is exactly what I am looking for as well. I want to enjoy a successful spell in Cyprus and go as far as possible in Europe.
When did the first contact take place and how easy was it for you to make your decision?
The first approach came at the beginning of June. From the very first moment there was a very positive atmosphere in the discussions and I did not need much time to say “yes”. There were other offers as well, but Apollon was the club that made me feel most comfortable and I believed it was the best choice for me.
How important was your conversation with the head coach?
I wanted to speak with the coach before joining, something he himself was keen to do. We had a very meaningful conversation and he explained his plans, what he expects from me and how I can fit into his system. To be honest, the way he spoke about the team was one of the main reasons that convinced me to come to Apollon.
Who did you speak to about Apollon and what did you want to know?
I spoke with Praxitelis Vouros, with whom I played together at OFI, as well as Brandon Thomas. I wanted to learn about the club’s ambitions, the daily life within the club, the supporters and life in the city. Everything I heard was extremely positive and confirmed what I had already been told.
You have experienced different football cultures. How have those experiences shaped you?
A great deal. Experiencing different cultures helps you develop first as a person and then as a footballer. I have taken something valuable from every team and every country, and that has helped me improve year after year.
How important was your time in Arsenal’s academy programme?
It was a very important experience. The programme brought together selected players from southeastern Europe. There was a strict schedule and very high demands. It was difficult, especially at such a young age, but it was a great experience and laid the foundations for everything that followed in my career.
What do you remember most from your spell at Botev Plovdiv?
Above all, I remember the affection I received from both the club and the supporters from the first day until the last. We experienced great moments, won a trophy and fought for important objectives. It was a period that helped me grow and gain valuable experience.
How would you describe yourself as a player?
I consider myself an attack-minded left-back. I enjoy helping the team in attack, whether through crosses, my left foot, one-on-one situations or my involvement in the build-up. I do not think I lack defensive qualities, but the attacking side of the game is definitely what characterises me the most.
You started out as a midfielder. How did the transition to left-back happen?
The change happened at OFI, when Mr Nioplias used me as a left-back for the first time. I had a good game and gradually started to enjoy the position more and more. That is where I really found myself. Nevertheless, I can also play in midfield if needed.
What goals have you set for the new season?
Personally, I always want to improve and become a better player every year. At team level, I want us to celebrate success and bring trophies to the club. In Europe, our objective is to go as far as possible and fight for a place in the league phase. We have to take things one game at a time, but I truly believe in this team.
Apollon are back in Europe. How much are you looking forward to those nights?
Very much. European matches are always special. They are nights that stand out and I cannot wait to experience them wearing the Apollon shirt. I am optimistic and I hope we will have plenty to celebrate at the end.
Which squad number did you choose?
Number 38. It is the number with which I established myself and experienced many great moments in my career, so I wanted to keep it.
What is the first message you would like to send to the Apollon supporters?
I cannot wait to meet them and play in front of them. I hope we will celebrate many victories together and that they will always stand by our side because the team needs their support. From our side, we will do everything possible to make them happy.
We welcome Konstantinos Balogiannis to the club and wish him every success in the blue and white shirt.
