Garry Rodrigues: “I’m hungry for football and success”
Garry Rodrigues spoke exclusively to our club’s official website following his transfer to Apollon Limassol. The experienced winger, with an impressive CV and spells at top European clubs, shares his first impressions, his ambitions, and a clear message: he’s here to help Apollon get back to winning titles.
Garry, welcome to Apollon. What are your first impressions of the club and the city of Limassol?
To be honest, I haven’t seen much of the city yet, but my first impression is excellent. Everyone welcomed me in the best possible way. The city is beautiful, the weather is amazing, and I had already heard great things about it from friends who live here. Now I understand why. I’m happy to be here, and above all, I feel good – which is the most important thing for me. So far, it’s been a great experience.
Did you speak to anyone from the team or former teammates before joining?
Yes, I spoke with Diego Biseswar, who’s a close friend, and also with Willy Semedo, who plays for Omonia and knows the country and the league well. They both had only good things to say.
What did Diego tell you about Apollon?
He told me that Apollon has a healthy football philosophy and is always among the title contenders. He highlighted the club’s attacking and attractive style of play, which suits my style perfectly. I’m a player who fights for trophies, and I love challenges like this.
What convinced you to accept Apollon’s offer?
The key factor was my conversation with the coach. He showed me clearly that he wanted me in the team and explained honestly what he expects from me. Of course, the club’s people – President Nikos Kirzis and Director Makis Papaioannou – also made great efforts to bring me here and explained the project and how great a club Apollon is. But it was the coach who made me feel special and helped me make the decision.
What did the coach tell you?
He said he really likes me as a player, appreciates my experience and quality, and believes I can help the team significantly. He told me he’s been following me for some time and knows both my strengths and the areas I can improve. More than anything, he made it clear that he really wanted me. When a coach speaks to you with such honesty and respect, there’s no need to think twice.
Did you have other offers?
Yes, I had two or three serious offers, just as important as Apollon’s. But what I felt here was different. I had the best feeling. Apollon is a very good team, and my goal is to challenge for the league title. The club won it three years ago – why not again?
Apollon fans know you well from your time in Greece. What are your memories from that period and how does it feel returning to a familiar football environment?
That played a big role in my decision. I know Apollon fans follow Greek football closely. I played for two big clubs there – PAOK and Olympiacos – and we experienced great moments, winning titles. I believe many fans already know what I can offer. That’s why they expect great things, and I promise to give my best, show my passion, and prove that I’m here to fight for them.
Your signing caused a lot of excitement among fans. How do you feel about the expectations?
I like that feeling. I’m used to high expectations. It motivates me even more to repay their trust. I’m not here to relax – I’ve always been a hard-working player who pushes and gives his all. I believe I can help. I want to show that this team can fight for the championship or, at the very least, win a trophy.
Do you still feel “hungry” for football?
Of course! That’s exactly why I’m here – to compete, to try something new. I could have stayed in Turkey, but I’d been there for many years. I respect the country and the league, but I wanted a change. Something different, but still in an environment I know and that knows me. It’s a whole different vibe.
You’ve played in several countries and leagues. What are your goals here? Do you still aim for more silverware?
Definitely. My main goal is to win the league. I know it’s not easy and it can’t happen overnight. But believing is the first step. You have to aim high. My personal goal is the championship. We’ll give everything we have to achieve it.
How would you describe your playing style and what can Apollon fans expect to see from you on the pitch?
I like one-on-one situations, dribbling, and creating chances for my teammates. I’m fast, right-footed, but I usually play on the left wing. I like cutting inside and shooting. I prefer playing on the left, but I can operate on both sides. I always play with passion and give everything for the team.
You’ve represented your country, Cape Verde, many times. What does that mean to you?
It shaped me as a footballer and as the person I am. Since becoming a professional, one of my biggest dreams was to play for my national team. It was also my father’s dream – he was born and raised in Cape Verde. So representing the country was like fulfilling his wish. It’s a big honour for me and made me the player I am today.
Does it bother you that the national team is far away and requires long travels?
Yes, it’s far, but when you play for your roots, you do it with pride. You don’t get tired. You feel joy. It’s a completely different feeling – you play with your heart.
What message would you like to send to the Apollon fans who are thrilled about your arrival?
A big thank you for the warm welcome. Ever since the first rumours, I’ve received so many messages, and I’ve seen them all. That gives me even more strength. I’ll give my best for the club. I want to help the team achieve something big – to win a title. I can’t wait to see you at the stadium and show you, through my game, what I can bring to the team.
