Leonidas Konomis: “I couldn’t wait to wear this shirt”
Leonidas Konomis is one of Apollon’s new additions ahead of the upcoming season. The Cypriot midfielder spoke to apollon.com.cy about his move to the club, the journey that brought him here, the goals he has set with the blue jersey and the message he wants to send to the Apollon supporters.
Welcome to Apollon, Leonidas. How do you feel about your transfer?
Thank you very much. I felt a great sense of pride joining one of the biggest clubs in Cyprus.
From the moment I learned that Apollon were interested in signing me, all I felt was pride. I couldn’t wait to come here and play for this club.
When did the first contact take place?
My agent informed me about Apollon’s interest and my answer was immediately positive.
Everyone knew that I was under contract with Olympiakos and that the two clubs would have to reach an agreement. There was a good relationship between all parties and everything went smoothly.
Who is Leonidas Konomis?
I started my football journey in the academies of Anorthosis and later moved to the Omonia Nicosia academy. I then joined Nea Salamina, where I made my first-team debut. After that, I moved to THOI, where I enjoyed the first full season of my career.
I later joined Omonia 29 May and I remained there for two years before deciding to take a step down in order to get more playing time, which I found at PAEEK.
Over the last two seasons I played for Olympiakos and I believe that period was the best spell of my career so far.
Midfielder or centre-back?
My natural position is in midfield. However, during the last 18 league matches I played as a centre-back and I really enjoyed that role as well.
I don’t have a particular preference. I will play wherever the coach needs me.
What made you say “yes” to Apollon?
Since I was a kid, I used to follow Apollon and I always admired the atmosphere created by the supporters. I even used to sing some of the team’s chants, while I have always loved the club’s colours.
Joining Apollon is the fulfilment of a big dream. It is special to play for a club with such a passionate fanbase and such a rich history.
From the moment I heard about Apollon’s interest, I was genuinely excited.
I want to win titles with the club and help the team reach the highest possible level.
Which squad number did you choose and why?
I chose number 37 because it has a special meaning for me and my family.
I have been wearing it since I was 15 years old. It comes from the sum of the birth dates of my family members. It is a number that has accompanied me throughout my career and I wanted to keep it at Apollon as well.
What message would you like to send to the Apollon fans?
I was at the Cup Final and witnessed first-hand the incredible support the fans gave the team.
I want them to continue standing by us in the same way. From my side, I promise that I will always give 200% for them.
I hope we can experience many great moments together at the stadium again. I want them to keep singing and supporting the team and I will do everything I can to repay that love.
