Peter Leeuwenburgh stays until 2027

Apollon Football (Public) Ltd is pleased to announce the contract extension of goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh until May 2027.

The Dutch shot-stopper joined Apollon in July 2023 and has since made 53 appearances across all competitions, keeping 18 clean sheets. During the recently concluded season, he was also one of the team’s vice-captains.

Peter Leeuwenburgh spoke exclusively to www.apollon.com.cy about his contract extension with our club until 2027. In this excerpt from his full interview in the official club magazine, the Dutch goalkeeper explains what this new deal means to him — and why, as he says, the decision to stay was “an easy one.”

What does this new contract mean to you personally?
I’m very happy to have signed a new deal. It wasn’t a difficult decision for me or my family. Apollon had already informed us very early on of their intention to keep me — even before my injury. They were clear, honest and supportive, and that gave me confidence.
My family is happy, the kids are at school, my wife has friends and a job. We are now part of the community. That’s why it was an easy decision.

You went through a difficult spell this season due to injury, yet the club showed faith in you. How important was that support for you?
It was crucial to my recovery. When you don’t know what’s going to happen after you come back, when your future is uncertain, it creates even more stress — on top of the injury itself.
It was a very stressful period for me. But from the very next day after the match, I received messages and phone calls from important people at the club.
They all told me they wouldn’t lose their trust in me, that their confidence remained intact, that their plans hadn’t changed.
And those messages didn’t stop. They kept coming throughout my rehabilitation.
It meant a lot to know — at least in that regard — that I didn’t need to worry. It helped me enormously. And they proved they meant what they said.

If you complete your contract, will Apollon be the club with the most years in your career?
Technically, I spent more years under contract with Ajax, but not all of those were with the first team.
If we’re talking about first-team appearances, then yes — Apollon will be the club I’ve stayed at the longest.
We are happy here — both myself and my family. I wouldn’t mind staying for at least another two years.
I truly believe this club has a lot of room to grow. My goal is to help Apollon get back into Europe.
There is momentum here, and there’s a lot of potential — and I want to experience that future here.

What would you like to say to the club’s supporters now that a new chapter begins?
I know the team’s performances haven’t been what you expected or what this club deserves.
But I truly appreciate all the personal support and love you’ve shown me over the last two years.
I hope we can continue like this — and give you better performances as a team in return.

The full interview will be published in the upcoming issue of the official club magazine APOLLON LEMESOS.

The Apollon Limassol family wishes the player continued success in blue and white.
