FOR THE FIFTH TIME IN A EUROPEAN GROUP STAGE
Winning the 2021-22 league title secured automatic qualification for the European group stage of the following season.
In the draw for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, our team was paired with Maccabi Haifa, by no means an easy opponent. With an aggregate score of 4-2, our team was eliminated by the Israeli champions. The first leg ended in a 4-0 defeat in Israel, while Apollon won the return leg 2-0 at the GSP Stadium.
However, there was still a safety net, as the club had already secured a place in the UEFA Europa League play-offs against Olympiacos of Piraeus.
Unfortunately, luck was not on our side, as the team was eliminated in the penalty shoot-out. Both matches ended 1-1, with the second leg taking place in Piraeus at the intimidating Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium.
The Group Stage Matches
As mentioned above, Apollon had already secured a place in the UEFA Europa Conference League draw, which took place on 26 August, and was drawn into Group E alongside Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, Liechtenstein’s Vaduz and Ukraine’s Dnipro-1.
With a record of two wins, one draw and three defeats, our team collected seven points and finished in third place.
